News on the Church Roof - the final chapter!
May 2008 A very happy evening on 6th April saw a large congregation give thanks for the completion of the repairs to the roof and other parts of the fabric of St. Mary's Church. The Archdeacon of Wells, the Prebendary Nicola Sullivan welcomed both villagers and representatives of the Trusts and other funders who had supported the renovation - some 60 guests in all. The witness of the church was highlighted in Nicola's thanks to everyone concerned, in the sermon by the Reverend Michael Hayes and in personal accounts by church members. A benefice choir of 20 was in good voice, and together with Ken Sherring at the organ, provided some exceptional music, much enjoyed by everyone. After the service, most stayed for a glass of wine and canapés. A wonderful and memorable evening! April 2008 A Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday 6th April at
6:30pm. Archdeacon Nicola Sullivan will attend and everyone is welcome March 2008 Work is now complete and the scaffolding has been removed. The spring clean will be on Monday & Tuesday 3rd & 4th March February 2008 Work should finish this month. Following a major spring clean in March, we will be holding a thanksgiving service on Sunday 6th April at 6:30pm. It is hoped that contributors and donors will be able to attend. January 2008 Work continues on schedule: Scaffolding in place both outside and inside the church... ...leaving a restricted space for services - but we still enjoy coffee and chat afterwards!
October 2007 The scaffolding is up and work has commenced September 2007 All funds are now in place and we look forward to the work beginning very soon. April 2007 Fundraising is complete! We still need £1,000 in order to claim the grant from Viridor - see the March entry below - but all other funds are in place. Unfortunately the start date of the work has had to be deferred and will not now begin until September, but we hope to see completion by Christmas. The fund raising committee extend their grateful thanks to all who have contributed and supported us since the launch of the appeal. We particularly acknowledge grants received from the following organisations:
We thank God that we have reached the target so quickly. March 2007 WONDERFUL NEWS - ALMOST THERE! We are delighted to have been awarded a grant of £20,400 from the Viridor Landfill Community Fund. This is tremendous news and brings our target well within our reach. To qualify for this award we need to raise £2,082 (10% of the gross amount of the grant) from outside sources, i.e. not from Church funds. This amount is a contribution to Viridor's charity 'Entrust' which administers the Community Fund. Some donations have already been received, but if you would like to contribute cheques should be made payable to 'Viridor Waste Management Ltd.' Please phone Christine Adams for details of where to send the cheque. We have now had confirmation from English Heritage that work can go ahead, as detailed below, and we expect scaffolding to erected in mid-April with a completion date sometime in August.
The report on the first phase, i.e. the investigation into the work required, has been received from the Architects, Philip Hughes Associates, and has been sent to English Heritage, together with tenders for the work. We await their approval. The scope of the work is to include the following: 1 Strip and recover the lead parapet gutters and slate roofs to the nave 2 Undertake roof structure repairs to the nave 3 Consolidation of the stonework to the parapet walls of the nave 4 Consolidation of the plasterwork of the nave ceiling 5 Consolidation of the tower crucifixion and west window tracery stonework 6 Conserve and protect the mediaeval painting We hope that work will commence in the spring and should take about 14 weeks Fund-Raising Our target remains at £80,000 We are delighted that our total to date has reached just over £46,000.

Included in this total is a grant of £6,500 from the
Historic Churches Preservation Trust
(click here for their website) for which
we are very grateful. Fund-raising continues and other events are being
planned, however single
or regular monthly donations or even an interest-free loan will be very welcome. Diary Dates: Saturday 5th May - The Plant Sale (see "What's on" page for further details) Thank You The three events held recently were well supported and very much enjoyed. On 1st December the choir from Chilton Cantelo School sang beautifully in their concert of seasonal music, conducted by Peter Rice. The organist was Harold Jackson. We are grateful to them for a most enjoyable evening and the roof fund gained about £300. On the following day we held our Christmas Bazaar with a wide selection of crafts, Christmas presents, caked etc. on sale. This event was held in aid of the general church fund - other bills also have to be paid! £600 was raised. The Friends of St Mary's Christmas lunch was held on 9th December in the village hall, when 58 guests sat down to roast turkey and all the trimmings. A happy time was had by all and the level of chatter increased as the afternoon progressed! The (rather brief) pantomime was also appreciated. The Friends are kindly donating the proceeds to the roof fund, which will be swelled by a further £300 or so. These events could not have been held without much organisation and work and we are grateful to everyone who gave their time and effort, always cheerfully, and everyone who supported us. Thank you all.
No presents please – just a roof! When Joyce Crang recently celebrated her 80th birthday, she asked friends and family to make donations to St Mary’s Mudford Roof Appeal instead of giving presents. The result was an extremely generous total of £1,660 for which we are very grateful.
